Happy New Year!

This issue includes:

Passion and Purpose

Why is passion so important? Passion
is the energy that moves people from within. Passion is what motivates you and makes you more effective. Passion helps turn “impossibles” into reality and you need passion in your life to feel alive.

I am very passionate about being able to reach out to others and share with them my love of drumming in hopes that it will make a positive difference in their lives. When my life gets so bogged down with the responsibilities of being a single mom of three, it is my passion for drumming and my desire to make a difference that pulls me through.

There is great a amount of joy in knowing that every little step forward you take is one step closer to achieving your dreams. It is a very rewarding cycle to be on. The more vision and passion you have, the better you feel. The better you feel, the more vision and purpose you will have.

It is my passion and vision that has steered me toward creating this newsletter for you. I hope by giving you honest reviews, sincere advice and tips, and helpful information that it will encourage you to explore more possibilities, and motivate you to reach your desired goals.

How do I know that Freestyle Hand Drumming can increase your self confidence, motivate you, inspire you and increase the quality of your life? Simply because, if it works for me it can work for you.

My question to you is this: What do you have passion for? What do you love to do? It is a brand new year in which you can explore possibilities and desires you may have put on hold for far too long. Don’t let fear stand in your way. Take a deep breath, have faith in yourself and just take one step forward. You are capable of anything!

Dare to Dream

I have a dream. Well more than a dream. For me it is another clear vision and intuitive knowing and I won’t let it pass me by unnoticed. Just telling you about my vision will bring me one step closer to putting it in motion. This is a very exciting process, thank you for listening.

My vision is this: I will dedicate 10% of all earnings from my Freestyle Drumming business to making a difference in the lives of orphans in Africa. Even though at the moment it is hard enough for me to provide for my own family, my intuitive nature tells me to trust this feeling and move forward with it.

For those of you who don’t know me, I should mention that I know first hand what it is like to care deeply for a child who was born in a far away land. I adopted one of my daughters from an orphanage in China in March of 2002. She has blessed my life profoundly. I will never forget the millions of other children in the world who are needing families. If I can make a difference in any way, I will gladly do my part.

I have decided to find an orphanage that I can have close contact with, a place where I can truly establish a role in helping the orphans. I am looking for a close connection with a person working in Africa, someone I can trust. I do already have a good lead on a particular orphanage in Ghana but there are still a lot of details that need to be worked out. I trust that it will all fall into place soon. I have faith.

If you, or somebody you know, has any suggestions towards helping me make this happen please email me with any information, I would greatly appreciated it.

Questions and Answers

Dear Pamela,

I’ve always wanted to play hand drums and I have finally decided to get one for myself. What kind of drum would you suggest I buy?

Signed,
Choices Galore

Dear Choices Galore,

Congratulations on your decision to treat yourself to your very first drum! As a “freestyle” drummer I support you in buying any type of drum that you find best suits for your own personal taste. Don’t limit your choice just because of what you see others playing.

To make it a little easier for you to decide, let me explain the differences by dividing hand drums into 2 categories: Natural and Synthetic heads ("heads" being the surface that you play on).

Natural Heads - Any drum that has a head made from the skin of an animal such as goat, cow, snake, etc .

Advantages:

These kind of drums come from all over the world and there are many beautiful quality drums to choose from. The advantage of these types of drums is the traditional aspect of them and the sound that the drum produces. If your plan is to mainly play your drum in an indoor environment, then natural headed drums may suit your taste.

Your best bet before purchasing this type of drum, is to try playing it first. Make an effort to listen to the different sounds that you can create on it. Does it offer you a sound that you are comfortable with? Is it the right size? Is it too heavy to carry around? Does it seem to breakable? Do you really want to have to worry about your drum every time you take it anywhere? Play on what you are drawn to and what feels best for you.

Disadvantages:

If you choose to purchase a drum with a natural head be aware that these types of drums usually need a lot more care! If the drum has roping for tuning, you have to know how to tune it .

Many drums on the market are not sold pretuned. Ask before purchasing how to tune it or ask if you can pay to have it tuned. Also ask if there is someone in your vicinity that can re-skin the head if it was to break and the cost of doing so.

Keep in mind that these types of drums can dramatically be affected by climate and environment.

Synthetic Heads

Advantages:

Drums made with synthetics heads are far more durable than drums with natural heads. You can buy them pretuned or you can purchase easily tunable ones. Drums with synthetic heads are great for playing outside in any weather because they are weather resistant.

Disadvantage:

I don't really see a disadvantage of synthetic drums, although some people just dont like the sound they produce as much as one with a natural head. It's just a matter of preference.

I will be completely straight forward with you, REMO drums have the best quality synthetic drums on the market. They are incredibly durable, portable (lighter than wood), tunable and reasonably-priced. These drums will last you forever and they have a huge selection of styles to choose from.

If someone asks me what kind of drum they should buy, I would first suggest a REMO. My main reason is durability. No worries, just good quality drums.

Sincerely,
Pamela Lynn
